How did MG get started?
In 2001, several of Monmouth's farmers came together to form a support network which would not only promote local farms and products but also increase public awareness of the variety of local farms and the importance of an active and sustainable agricultural landscape in the community. The group was jump-started with funding from the Working Landscapes Grant program, and has received assistance from the Maine Farms Project of Coastal Enterprises Inc.
In our first season (2001-2002), Monmouth Grows held farm tours for town officials, a school farm day at the Cottrell School, and had some farms participating in the State Open Farm Day. Monmouth Grows has also hosted a workshop on USDA Farm Service Agency & Natural Resource Conservation Service programs, and hopes to offer more education and outreach opportunities to area farmers this coming fall and winter.
In the 2003-2004 season, Monmouth Grows saw renewed vitality; we developed a mission statement, a new logo, our central goals, a set of initiatives and projects to achieve those goals, and have begun to develop a fundraising strategy. The group continues to explore our direction and priorities, and to identify each year what we hope to accomplish for ourselves and our community.
